Alchemy was the skill of either enchanting pre-existing items with magickal powers, or creating magickal items. Producing either an enchantment or a creation involved three things: the presence of two silver cauldrons, some commodities, and performing a sequence of ritualistic actions. In the year 26 AM, Mages were given new powers and freedom over their elemental abilities, which led to the art of Crystalbinding taking the place of Alchemy in the profession's skillset.

History
Alchemy was first discovered and developed when magick was still in its primal form, far more unpredictable and more difficult to handle. The alchemy laboratory in the Mages' guildhall in Kinsarmar's White Tower was placed on the first floor in order to create as wide a berth between alchemists and the changing orbits of the moons overhead. Early critics of the Mages were also concerned that the practice of alchemy had demonic roots, as the statues required in enchantment rituals depicted beguiling ouroboros. For this reason, the Mages placed their laboratory behind an entrance sealed with magical amethysts, not far from Vivaine, arguably one of the most powerful Mages in history, and just under the watchful eyes of a shrine to Janus.
